Town of Old Peñol.

Also called Peñón de Guatapé, this natural wonder is a large rock with more than 220 meters high, which some scholars say can weigh about 66 million tons.

The first person to climb the stone of Peñol de Guatapé was Luis Eduardo Villegas who was an inhabitant of the sector, this happened in 1954. Don Luis took 5 days to climb, with the help of some of his friends.

Today the Piedra del Peñol is owned by the family of Don Luis and is one of the most important and frequented tourist attractions in Colombia.

The Town of Guatapé was founded on October 4, 1811, for a long time its main economy was agriculture. But after the construction of the dam and to start painting and building the baseboards of Guatapé its economy began to strengthen in tourism. Today it is one of the most colorful towns in Colombia.

Myths About the Peñol Stone.

Among the many myths and legends that exist today about the stone of the peñol, is the story of the Devil with axe.

It is said that the devil seeing everything that was happening with the stone of the peñol and the popularity he was having took an axe and every night he hit it with the axe to be able to steal it, but God every morning damaged the work that the Devil did, for this reason the devil got tired and left his plan, although for this reason a crack was left on one side of the Stone.
